PPG Place Ice Rink Still Not Open Due To Warm Weather

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The PPG Place Ice Rink suffered yet another delay when it was unable to open Saturday for a previously scheduled event.

The ribbon cutting and first skate were scheduled for Thursday, but were cancelled because it was too warm. Organizers originally expressed their hope on Thursday night that the ice rink would be open in time for Light Up Night on Friday, but that ultimately did not come to pass. When they announced it wouldn't be ready for Light Up Night, they said it would be open in time for the Mascot Skate event Saturday afternoon.

But on Saturday, the rink was still not ready. This week's warmer weather is preventing the ice from completely freezing, and organizers say it isn't safe.

Beth Sutton with the RMU Island Sports Center Figure Skating Academy said Friday that she got a call in the afternoon to let her know that her group would not be able to perform their show at Light Up Night.

"They've done everything they can, but the conditions just aren't really conducive for people to skate on the ice right now," she said.

They hope to have the rink up and running sometime next week.
