Westmoreland Mall Putting New Security Measures In Place Ahead Of Holiday Rush

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- Shoppers are getting ready to hit the malls for Black Friday and the busy holiday shopping season, and many places are putting new security measures into place to keep everyone safe.

The Westmoreland Mall is just one facility where they decided to implement new security procedures.

You have to wonder what goes through the mind of a person who steals Christmas gifts out of other people's cars.

"I just don't understand it, there's jobs out there," says Michelle Brack, a holiday shopper.

Unfortunately, this is the time of year where such ne'er-do-wells apply their time and attention to ruining your holiday by literally making off like bandits.

Westmoreland Mall has been the place to be for thieves. So, this year, the Westmoreland County Sheriff's Department and Pennsylvania State Police have a Christmas surprise for them.

"We're going to have undercover officers, plus routine patrols check these areas," said Trooper Steve Limani, of State Police.

And that's not all.

"We will be inside the stores," said Trooper Limani.

KDKA took a walk with Trooper Limani, and we found some tempting targets for thieves.

"Window partially opened to try to keep from getting to hot. Not a great idea," he said. "Here's someone's handbag, looks like their wallet is sitting on top of the handbag."

The key to keeping yuletide thieves from having a Merry Christmas on you tab comes down to the simplest things.

First, lock you doors and put your packages in the trunk.

Don't make it easy for them. If thieves wanted to work hard, they wouldn't be thieves in the first place.
