Humane Society Lifts Quarantine After Virus Outbreak

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society lifted a quarantine Thursday after an outbreak caused concern earlier this month.

Earlier this month, the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society moved a number of its dogs into quarantine when six dogs died and several became sick from a highly contagious canine virus called parvovirus.

Thursday, the Humane Society said dogs would be available on their kennel floor, and they will begin accepting surrenders again on Saturday. All their dogs have been bathed, and areas in the building have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

The Humane Society says they believe the virus was introduced to their dogs when they accepted a local stray into the facility before it began displaying symptoms of the virus.
