One Dead After ATV Accident In Beaver County

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- An ATV rider was killed Friday afternoon when he went off a trail and into a pond that was several feet deep, according to officials.

It happened around 4 p.m. in an old strip mining area in Franklin Township, Beaver County.

He was apparently trapped under the ATV until a bystander found him and pulled him out, but it was too late.

"My understanding was that he was trapped under the ATV for a period of time before other bystanders could pull him out," said Bill Pasquale, a deputy coroner in Beaver County.

It took quite a bit of effort for emergency crews to get to the victim.

"Very muddy, a lot of water to cross," said Franklin Township Fire Department Chief Steve Bailey. "There was no way to get there without crossing through some body of water."

The victim was later identified as 60-year-old Robert Wright of Claysville.

A passenger was also hurt and flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, though that person's name wasn't immediately released.

Authorities are investigating whether others were in a group riding with Wright, and whether they left the scene after the crash.
