Outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel To Close Every Night This Week

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Drivers who use the Parkway West and Fort Pitt Tunnel have had to have some patience this year, and this week will be no different.

The outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel will be closed every night this week from Monday though Friday, and there will be single-lane restrictions in the inbound tunnel during the same time.

On the Parkway West, overnight on Tuesday and Thursday, it'll be closed outbound all the way out to I-79. But on Wednesday and Friday overnight, it's the exact opposite with the inbound side closed.

"We definitely appreciate the public's patience," said Steve Cowan, of PennDOT. "This is the largest project of the construction season."

The closures will take place every night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

PennDOT has posted two detours for this week's closures:

Posted Detour Monday, Nov. 30 and Wednesday, Dec. 2
Westbound detour route (between the Fort Pitt Bridge and Banksville Road Interchange)
• From the Fort Pitt Bridge, traffic will take the ramp to North Route 837/Route 51 West End (Exit 69C)
• Follow Route 837 (West Carson Street) to the West End Circle
• Turn left onto southbound Route 51 towards the Airport
• Follow Route 51 to Airport/Carnegie ramp to I-376 Parkway West
• End detour

But PennDOT says the good news is that they're in the home stretch with this project.

"We do anticipate one additional weekend closure for a final paving," said Cowan. "That may be pushed until next year, depending on the weather."
