City Teaming With National Coalition To Make Streets Safer For Everyone

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Anthony Hoppe rides his bike everywhere.

"It's my commute to work and to see my friends," Hoppe, of the North Side, said.

Hoppe said he'd like to see a bike lane added somewhere on East Carson Street on the South Side.

"I prefer to be on the front lane of East Carson where there's a lot more people, be a lot more safer," Hoppe said.

Safety is something the city is taking more seriously after some recent accidents.

"Safety is critical here. How do you successfully share streets is not just about who goes first at a turn, but how that's a safe experience," Pittsburgh City Planning Director Ray Gastil said.

No set plans are in place just yet, but there are a lot of ideas being thrown around when it comes to streets, sidewalks and intersections.

A group called The National Complete Streets Coalition is helping the city with its plans.

"We'll work with the city of Pittsburgh to help them develop a policy so they really change their way of doing transportation planning," Emiko Atherton, with the National Complete Streets Coalition, said.

"You have a fabulous and interesting topography. A lot of narrow streets and big hills, which both present a lot of opportunities," Atherton said.

"On these skinny streets and you have all these potholes, not only is it damaging to bicyclers' vehicles, but it's damaging to cars as well," Del Ammons, of the South Side, said.

The city said Complete Streets policies are already implemented in 800 communities across the U.S. As for specific projects, the city hopes to have a plan in place in 2016.
