Fallen St. Clair Twp. Officer Laid To Rest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - This morning, hundreds of police officers from the area converged on Johnstown to remember a fallen officer.

Officer Lloyd Reed, 54, was gunned down on Saturday, while responding to a domestic dispute call.

This morning's service was held at the Cambria County War Memorial.

"I truly cannot say enough good about him. He was kind, gentle, caring but also very brave as he demonstrated incredible courage during his last call. Lloyd is a true hero," St. Clair Township Police Capt. Donald Hess said.

State Police say Reed was responding to a domestic dispute call about 9:15 p.m. Saturday night at a home at 131 Ligonier Street in New Florence.

Officers say Reed exchanged gunfire with the suspect, Ray Shetler Jr., 31, of New Florence.

Officer Reed was struck in the chest and passed away at a local hospital.

Mourners began to arrive at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Johnstown early Thursday to pay their final respects to Officer Reed, who worked for the St. Clair Township Police Department.

He served the St. Clair Township community as a police officer for the past five years. However, he had been a police officer for a total of 25 years.

Fellow officers called him a cop's cop and a good teacher.

"Always willing to help. I know I got hurt on the job at the beginning of this year and there wasn't a day that would go by that he wouldn't call me just to check on me," Hooversville Police Chief Adam Richards said.

"He wanted the tough shifts," Hess said. "He worked nights, he worked the weekends, he worked the holidays. And never complained."

The Western Pennsylvania Police Benevolent Foundation is collecting donations to help Officer Reed's widow, Rose.

"Rose, we love you," said Sgt. Vicki Waters with the St. Clair Township Police. "You have been welcomed into our family of blue. God, I hope you love police officers because we're never gonna leave you. You're never gonna be alone."

"Lloyd died the way that he lived, trying to help somebody," Hess said. "Rest in peace, my friend. We'll take over the watch from here."
