Early-Morning Fire Destroys Armstrong County Pizza Shop

SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- Fire ripped through an Armstrong County pizza shop early Monday morning.

The fire was called in by a passerby around 1:10 a.m. When crews arrived at Giovonni's Pizza on State Route 268 in Sugarcreek Township, flames were shooting from the roof.

"Upon arrival we had flames shooting through the roof of the pizza shop here," Sugarcreek Twp. Fire Chief James Hillwig said.

Mutual aid was called to the scene and firefighters used an aerial truck to help put the flames out from above.

"We had the ladder truck and stuff set up and the guys did a good knockdown," Chief Hillwig said. "This is going to be pretty much a total loss for them."

The chief said the fire marshal will be looking into the cause Monday morning, but it appears this was accidental.

Nobody was inside the pizza shop at the time of the fire.

One firefighter injured his knee at the scene. He was taken to Kittanning Hospital to be checked out and is expected to be okay.

Around 8:30 a.m. the wind kicked up embers inside and fire crews had to once again come back and work on hot spots.
