Expert Urges Families Not To Adopt Pets As Christmas Gifts

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It sounds like a sweet idea, a puppy with a red bow on Christmas morning.

But just be sure that whoever you're giving that pet to knows the work that comes with it.

'Tis the season for giving, and while the heart may be in the right place, there's a lot of responsibility that comes with a pet after Christmas morning.

Mary Kennedy Withrow with the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society says gifting a pet is not the best idea.

"Christmas isn't an ideal time to introduce a new pet into the home," Withrow said.

Withrow says a new pet should be introduced in a calm atmosphere. The hustle and bustle of the holidays can sometimes cause the pet to display negative behaviors that it would not show otherwise.

"There's a lot going on, especially for a new animal in your home," she said.

Having a pet is a commitment for years to come, so be prepared and don't make it a surprise. If you're looking to bring a new pet into the home, make the decision as a family.

"We can help you find an animal that suits your lifestyle, your family lifestyle, the age of your kids," Withrow said. "There's a lot of things to be taken into consideration."

If the whole family is involved and is ready for the responsibilities, the experience will be a positive one for everyone, including the new addition.

The Humane Society is also asking you to adopt, not shop. There are thousands of homeless dogs and cats that are looking for forever homes.

"I always encourage people to adopt an animal," Withrow said. "It is a wonderful addition to the family, and if you don't want to adopt an animal, maybe make a donation in memory of an animal."

Also, remember pets are expensive.
