County To Charge For Renting Courthouse For Weddings

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Allegheny County will begin charging a fee to rent areas of the historic courthouse for weddings and other gatherings.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that council members approved an ordinance this month for the fee for rental of parts of the courthouse and county office building for private occasions.

County manager William McKain said "people keep calling" about holding weddings at the National Historic Landmark. The county plans to market the sites through tourism agencies and social media.

Before the ordinance, the county received only out-of-pocket reimbursements for private events, such as the cost to staff a building guard, electrician or custodian.

There will still be no charge for those getting married in brief ceremonies during regular courthouse hours, as long as they don't interfere with courthouse business.
