Inmate Escapes From Greene County Jail

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An inmate who escaped from Greene County Prison remains on the run more than 24 hours later.

State Police say 27-year-old Waylon Hanlan made plans to escape from Greene County Prison while talking on the jail telephone to his sister, who was arrested Monday.

Hanlan was brought to the jail on Dec. 11 for a probation violation and misdemeanor charges of fleeing, eluding and simple assault. He escaped Sunday night.

"He escaped the building into a fenced area, scaled the fence and ran off into a wooded area," said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Matthew Jardine.

According to the criminal complaint, 19-year-old Vanessa Hanlan was supposed to pick up her brother near the jail at a designated time after he escaped, but she told authorities she became nervous and went home. She said her brother Waylon showed up later at her home in Dilliner, riding an ATV four-wheeler.

"Once he was at the residence in Dilliner, she provided him with a change of clothes, and she harbored him there for a while during his escape," Jardine said.

Vanessa Hanlan was arrested later and now faces felony charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution and conspiracy.

Waylon remains on the loose. Police believe he took off with his brother.

Waylon Hanlan is described as being 6-foot-3-inches tall, weighs about 145 pounds, has a slim build and blonde hair and blue eyes.

State police say they believe he may be driving a black 2004 Honda Civic coupe with the license plate JTT-6241.

Anyone with information on Hanlan's whereabouts is asked to contact the State Police Barracks in Waynesburg at 724-627-6151.

The Greene County Prison warden said after the escape Sunday the jail was put on lockdown and all other prisoners were accounted for.

Greene County Prison was the scene of another short-lived jail break back in June 2013. A man facing a murder charge and another man charged with an armed bank robbery broke out of the jail, but were re-captured within two hours, less than a mile from the lock-up.
