Vacant House Fire In McKeesport Spreads To, Destroys Woman's Home

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) -- A woman lost everything after a fire in a vacant house in McKeesport spread to and destroyed her home on New Year's Day.

Firefighters say a vacant house in the 2500-block of Cleveland Street caught on fire around 2:30 a.m., and the flames quickly spread to the homes on either side of it.

A man who was living in one of the houses escaped unharmed. The woman renting the other house, Amy McGrew, wasn't home at the time of the fire.

"The city needs to do something about these houses that are abandoned, and people coming in and just loitering and doing wrong things in there," McGrew said. "Because this isn't the first time there's been people in that abandoned house."

The vacant house collapsed during the fire.

The McKeesport fire chief said there was a similar incident about a month ago in the 2600-block of Cleveland Street, but he did not say if the two incidents are related.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
