2 Injured Firefighters Reunited With Families After Wilkinsburg Blaze

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A group of firefighters had a close brush with death while battling a blaze in Wilkinsburg last week. Now, two more of them have been reunited with their families.

Seven firefighters were injured while fighting the fire in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue on Friday.

While rescuing an 86-year-old woman, the fire quickly intensified and flames engulfed the top floor.

Within seconds, seven firefighters were trapped and had to jump or go down a ladder head-first.

Six of the seven firefighters have since been released from the hospital. But, two of them have recently been reunited with their loved ones.

Lt. Mark Kuzma was elated to be reunited with his wife, Nicole, and cute little daughter Emma.

Kuzma is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis and broken foot. He faces a 4 to 5 month recovery.

Firefighter Frank Trabucco has taken his first step after the flashover forced him to leap from a second floor window.

He suffered a fractured vertebrae, but he's not paralyzed and is thankful to be with wife, Heather Abraham, and his daughter, Lila.

Kuzma and Trabucco both feared the other died in the flashover.

So, imagine what a great relief it was when they ended up together in a hospital room - alive.

Lt. James O'Toole was another firefighter that jumped out a window.

"Luckily, I found a window, and I was like, 'I got to get out of here somehow' … I jumped out a back window," he said. "By the grace of God, we're all alive. It was very close."
