Councilman-Elect Seeking Pardon Owes Thousands In Fines

MCKEESPORT, Pa. (AP) - A man who says he should be sworn in as a city councilman in Pennsylvania because he's paid his debt to society for a 1993 felony drug conviction really hasn't.

Court records show 45-year-old Corey Sanders still owes more than $36,000 in fines and restitution.

The McKeesport councilman-elect is seeking a pardon from Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf to take office. He pleaded no contest to two felony drug counts 23 years ago and was sentenced to four years in prison. The Democrat was prevented from being sworn in Monday.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Sanders said he addressed the fines in his pardon application. His attorney didn't respond to messages.

A spokesman for the board of pardons chairman says it could take months before the application is officially filed.
