Salvation Army Surpasses Donation Goal For Western Pa.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One week before Christmas, the Salvation Army was still short of its goal of raising $2,604,268 in western Pennsylvania, but a last-minute surge of donations helped them surpass their goal by more than $100 thousand.

In late November, the Salvation Army announced how much they hoped to raise through their Red Kettle Campaign across western Pennsylvania. They set their goal at $2,604,268. But one week before Christmas, they were still more than half a million dollars short of their goal.

"But fortunately, as last year, the local media really rallied behind our cause and helped to spread the word about our needs," said Major Deborah Sedlar, the Salvation Army's Western Pennsylvania Divisional Commander.

The final total for donations in western Pennsylvania came to more than $2,721,300.

In a press release, Sedlar said that despite achieving their overall goal for the region, 10 out of 39 worship and service centers in the area fell short of their individual goals. Pittsburgh's Westside center raised only 65 percent of its goal, and Pittsburgh Temple raised only 75 percent. The other 8 centers that raised less than 90 percent of their goals were Erie Temple, Indiana, Latrobe, New Castle and Rochester.
