Allegheny County Police Superintendent Retiring

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - After a 48 year career in law enforcement, Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt is retiring.

Moffatt, 73, began his law enforcement career with Pittsburgh's Bureau of Police. He worked up the ranks for 36 years, becoming the first deputy chief of the bureau.

Moffatt has served as superintendent for county police for 12 years. He says he's proud of the officers he's worked with over the years, and the commitment they've made to the department.

He says he's seen a lot of changes throughout his career in law enforcement.

"When I came onto the job and started out, the loyalty was always there. But I think the citizens now, don't have as much respect or fear as we had back in the day," Moffatt said.

The county manager says they'll be conducting a nationwide search for Moffatt's replacement. He plans to retire in March or April, once his successor is selected.

He plans to spend his retirement with family, and wants to stay in Pittsburgh.
