Study: Women Pay More Than Men For Similar Products

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Many products marketed to women are virtually the same as products marketed to men, but guess who's paying more?

42 percent of the time, the girls are forking over more cash, costing them thousands of dollars more over their lifetimes.

"Actually, I buy men's socks because they're half the price of ladies'," one woman said.

A recent study looked at more than 800 products and found that on-average, women pay seven percent more than men for similar products.

This practice is called gender-based pricing. It is also known as the "woman tax" or "pink tax."

One mom, with three boys and a girl, says she knows this struggle all too well.

"The girls are more expensive than boys. It should be the same prices, but it's not," she said.

For example, the same brand of jeans will charge $88 for women's style, compared to $68 for men's.

The same can be seen in workout wear, one top costs $3 less for men than a similar style for women.

The unfair pricing doesn't stop at clothes. The study found there is a difference when it comes to toys too.

"A scooter marketed to girls was $49, when the exact same scooter painted red was $24. We saw this time and time again," said Julie Menin, a consumer expert.

However, the biggest price discrepancies were in personal care products, such as shampoos, conditioners and deodorant.

For example, one deodorant marketed for women cost the same as the men's brand, but the men's version contained more.
