"Winterfest" Fundraiser Brings In Support For Pittsburgh Food Bank

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - People throughout the area rely on the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Tamara Kilgore says that after the holidays, they work hard to keep support coming in.

"We receive tremendous support through the holiday season and one of the things we try to get people to remember is that hunger doesn't take a holiday, its 365 and right now a lot of our families are faced with deciding whether or not they want to eat or heat their house, and thats not a problem that any of our neighbors in our community should be faced with," Kilgore said.

The food bank receives donations from a number of community organizations, and the East End Co-op is no exception.

Saturday, the co-op is holding its annual "Winterfest" fundraiser for the food bank.

Not only is the event a good cause, it will also provide some fun.

"This year, we have a load of children's activities, so our friends from Grow Pittsburgh will be there, the Pittsburgh Center For Creative Reuse, and a bunch of other folks from the community that we partner with. We're going to have a photo booth, and we've got a DJ, who is DJ Nice Rec and he has worked with Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, so we're really excited to have him this year," said Heather Hackett with the East End Food Co-Op.

In addition, there will be tons of food and an auction. Organizers are hoping to raise around $4,000. For every dollar, the food bank can provide up to five meals.

Officials say over the past few years, donation totals have been doubling.

"Its overwhelming to go to work and see people come in and they get what they need and they come in looking distraught and then they leave with a smile on their face, it just makes you happy to get up and go to work in the morning,"

Winterfest is Saturday at the Hosanna House in Wilkinsburg from 1 to 5 p.m.
