One Woman Flown To Hospital After Freedom House Fire

BEAVER COUNTY (KDKA) -- One woman was flown to the hospital late Sunday morning after she suffered burns in a house fire and was forced to jump from a second-story window of her Freedom home.

Firefighters were on the scene of the fire around 11 a.m. at a house located on 8th Avenue.

Moments after the fire started, neighbors saw smoke pouring from the home.

Roy Wagner said he called 911 and then ran over and knocked on the front door.

"Started yelling for somebody, I opened the door and smoke was billowing out, it was brutal," he said.

A short time later he found the resident identified as 50-year old Dianne Kirk lying on the ground in the back yard.

"I heard someone yelling for help out in the back. She apparently had jumped out of the second floor window and landed in the back yard, I went back and helped her up the hill," he said.

Wagner said she was in extreme pain after jumping from the second floor window and had severe burns on both hands.

"She said her back was hurt, she screamed and said she was dying, she was burned pretty badly."

Firefighters say flames from a propane tank engulfed the wood frame structure.

When firefighters arrived they had two problems. They had to get quick medical attention to the resident and they had to put the fire out in her home.

"The main thing was we went down to aid her and we tried to hook the hydrant up the truck. Not enough help there until it comes in," said Chief Harry Gilarno.

Dianne Kirk was taken by life flight helicopter to the West Penn Hospital burn unit, no information is available on her condition.

One firefighter was treated at the hospital.
