Snow Falls Across Area, Prompts Early Dismissals In Southern School Districts

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The snow has been flying for much of the day, coating the area in a fresh blanket of snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. for Allegheny, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Parts of West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland, are also under the advisory.

"We will continue to see the threat of scattered, light snow showers down through this evening and overnight tonight, but not much additional accumulation," said KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla. "An inch or less tonight, and maybe another inch or less [Wednesday], and then the focus late in the week will turn to the much colder air that arrives."

City of Pittsburgh officials say they are operating under a Level Two Snow Alert, which means extra crews and materials are on standby.

The city says 70 plow trucks have been working throughout the day, and roads are being treated with a mixture of rock salt and liquid calcium chloride.

Crews are also working 12-hour shifts until the snow stops.

Areas to the south of the city are getting much more snow.

Southern Fayette County saw the first snow start to fall around 6 a.m. Initially, it was not nearly bad enough to call off school for Albert Gallatin School District students, but that changed quickly.

Students at the high school started boarding the buses around noon after an early dismissal.

"Our thought was get them home as soon as possible before the roads are impassable," said Chris Pegg, Albert Gallatin's transportation director.

The snow was not a gargantuan winter storm, but it was one that PennDOT had to take seriously.

"[We have] probably around 3,000 miles of roadway we have to take care of in the winter," said Tim Cook, of PennDOT. "We will be out 24/7, as long as the forecast calls for the continuing snow showers."
