Flags In Pennsylvania To Fly At Half-Staff In Scalia's Honor

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP/KDKA) - Gov. Wolf has ordered U.S. and Commonwealth flags at the Capitol Complex and at all state facilities to fly at half-staff to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Scalia, who served three decades on the nation's highest court, died Saturday at a resort ranch in West Texas. Officials say he died of natural causes. His body is expected to return to Washington on Tuesday.

The governor's proclamation said flags will remain at half-staff until interment.

Scalia's last visit to the Pittsburgh area was in 2011 when he was the keynote speaker at a centennial celebration for Duquesne University's law school.

"He had a brilliant legal mind, who really did care about the legal profession, and he also cared throughout his legal career, about the little person," said Ken Gormley, President-Elect of Duquesne University.

The Senate is on a break for the President's Day holiday, but President Obama has said he intends to nominate a successor to Scalia in "due time."

Presidential candidates have weighed in on what should be done with the empty seat. Republicans have held firm that their majority in the Senate will not move forward with anyone President Obama nominates.

Democrat candidates have held the opinion that lawmakers should give whomever is nominated a fair trial.

President Barack Obama has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at federal buildings throughout the nation and at U.S. embassies and military installations throughout the world.
