Public Safety Director Meets With Suspended Sgt., Needs More Time To Review Case

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The new Pittsburgh Public Safety director met Tuesday afternoon with a Pittsburgh Police sergeant who was suspended, pending termination, last week.

Sgt. Stephen Matakovich, who is on paid leave pending an appeal, is accused of assaulting a 19-year-old while working security at a high school football game at Heinz Field last November.

The incident was caught on surveillance video.

After several hours of testimony behind closed doors, no decision was reached.

"There absolutely is nothing I can tell you right now," said Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay. "We had an appeal hearing with the public Safety director. The facts will be reported to the director and he will be reviewing them and making his own determination."

Matakovich is on paid suspension. The Allegheny County District Attorney re-filed assault charges against him after the initial charges were dismissed by a magistrate.

Chief McLay is okay with the district attorney re-filing.

"I have to respect the integrity of the process," he said. "I believe the process will produce a just outcome."

The Pittsburgh Public Safety director, Wendell Hissrich, heard evidence today, but says he needs more time to look at the case.

No timetable has been set for his decision.
