Charleroi Residents Hope To Chase Away Winter With "Hoodie Hoo Day"

CHARLEROI (KDKA) -- On Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil delivered a cheery forecast to the delight of those who gathered on Gobbler's Knob.

Now, in Charleroi, Chamber of Commerce director Deb Keefer is dedicated to making that prognostication come true.

"'Hoodie Hoo Day' was designed not to predict the weather, but to chase winter away," she explains.

Saturday morning, Feb. 20, Magic City Square will be packed with revelers.

Two years ago, undaunted by a steady rain, the hundreds gathered with one purpose in mind. At the stroke of noon, they raised their arms to the sky and cried "Hoodie hoo" three times.

"Colored clothing is helpful," the Chamber director emphasizes.

You'll find plenty of that, down at Valley Pool and Spa.

"You want to scare away winter," spokeswoman Kristin Poppa says. "So we have lots of bright colors. We have boas. We have hoodies. Little monsters. There's sharks. Hot dogs. You name it for summer time and spring time."

She presents the colors of spring - at a discount.

And on Feb. 20, Valley Pool and Spa will be giving away 100 beach balls.
