Police: Caller Mistakenly Reported 3 Murdered In Trailer

GARRETT, Pa. (AP) - State police say a man who mistakenly reported a triple murder in southwestern Pennsylvania won't be charged with a crime.

State police Cpl. Scott Zigo says the caller, who isn't being identified, "Believed he was calling in a legitimate thing."

The call about 2 p.m. Wednesday prompted a massive police response in Garrett, a tiny borough about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Nearby residents were warned to stay inside as troopers went door-to-door, and buses at the nearby Meyersdale Area School District were held up as a precaution until about 3:45 p.m.

Zigo says the caller was "just a little confused as to what he saw" but wasn't calling a prank.

Garrett police Officer Rodney Norman says the situation was complicated by false rumors swirling on social media.
