Fish Frys: Are They Safe?

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - You'll wait in line a long time to get a fish sandwich at Ephiany Church Uptown. It's one of the most popular fish frys around.

"We do probably about 1,200 people in the lunch period and have about 15 volunteers right now," said Matthew Cox, a volunteer worker.

Fish fries are usually run by volunteers. But, are they trained in food safety? Do they know how to keep food safe?

"They should have certified food managers here to oversee all operations in preparation of the food," said David Allen with the Allegheny County Health Department.

All fish fries are required to have someone who is trained and certified by the county. There were two certified managers in the kitchen of Holy Angels Church in Hays on Friday.

There was also an inspector from the Health Department making sure it was safe.

"We plan to get out and inspect those on Fridays during lent, we make that a priority in our program," Allen said.

Holy Angels Church is serving a ton of fish here, literally; one ton every friday during lent. They've got a seal of approval from the health department after passing an inspection.

Epiphany Church got an inspection too, and they passed with flying colors.

The Health Department says that generally all fish frys are safe.
