Charges To Be Refiled Soon Against Suspended Police Sgt.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Sources say that Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Stephen Matakovich is expected to face charges again on Friday in connection with a confrontation outside Heinz Field last fall.

The incident, in which the sergeant is seen punching and shoving a 19-year-old South Park teenager, was captured on surveillance video.

The Allegheny County District Attorney is re-filing the charges after a district magistrate dismissed the original counts a few weeks ago.

A new charge of perjury is also likely in the case, which revolves around the alleged use of excessive force by Sgt. Matakovich while making the arrest.

In a related matter, a day after Mayor Bill Peduto said he was putting a stop to the practice of awarding overtime pay to officers under suspension, like Sgt. Matakovich, Pittsburgh's mayor told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "We'll give the officer his salary, but we won't use taxpayer dollars to pay overtime for positions that are not required."

Peduto also said he believed someone altered the date on a document signed by the city and the FOP which indicated the agreement was approved in 2014. The agreement permitted the practice of overtime pay for suspended city police.

Mayor Peduto said it was 2013 when the agreement was approved, before he took office in January of 2014.

Peduto said, "I want to know why the date was changed on those documents."
