Child Porn Offender To Stand Trial For Running Youth Sports Video Business

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – A man accused of violating his probation for possessing child pornography by running a business that produced videos of youth sporting events was in court Tuesday.

Earlier this month, Brandon Carter was arrested for violating Megan's Law requirements. According to police, Carter used the name Kalon Carter to run his business, Digix Films. He videotapes youth sporting events, anti-bullying campaigns.

"I'm not the person they think I am," said Carter on his way back to jail this morning.

Carter waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges he failed to register his address and his workplace with Crescent Township Police as required, given his sex offender status.

He got plenty of attention when he went to Grandview Upper Elementary School in Tarentum to shoot an anti-bullying video.

In 2012, he was convicted in federal court of possession of child pornography. Police say he used an alias through his current photography company to gain access to shoot school games and events.

There are no allegations that he had inappropriate contact with kids at the photo shoots, but his probation requires no contact with children.

As he left a magistrate's office in Coraopolis Tuesday, he claimed innocence.

"What I got charged with back in the day, I'm innocent of it. But people who don't know me, they're going to start saying harassing things about me anyway," he said. "But my friends and family know me. They know I'm innocent of these charges."

Most of his current trouble will be addressed in state and federal court, but on the charge of failure to report his address; his lawyer says he has a defense.

"The state charges are for failure to report his address which we dispute because he was living with his parents," said defense attorney Mike DeRiso. "We have 60 to 70 pieces of mail to show that. He would occasionally stay with his girlfriend, but again, I don't believe he's required to register that address."

Carter remains in jail, though because of a federal detainer due to the prior federal case.
