Woman Gets 3-6 Years In Prison For 2013 Crash That Killed Passenger
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A southwestern Pennsylvania woman will spend three to six years in prison for a fiery drunken-driving crash that killed her passenger.
The (Uniontown) Herald-Standard reports 35-year-old Shawna Courie was sentenced Thursday. She was convicted last month of charges including homicide by vehicle and DUI.
Prosecutors say the Vanderbilt woman's blood alcohol level was 0.211 percent when the Dodge Neon she was driving hit a tree. That's more than twice the legal limit.
Her passenger, 25-year-old Andrew Vrabel, died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries when the car caught fire on Sept. 23, 2013.
Defense attorney Rob Harper had blamed the car's brakes and steering, but prosecutors say Courie acknowledged being drunk when she got behind the wheel.
