Woman Dead After Being Hit By Train In Leetsdale

LEETSDALE (KDKA) -- A woman was struck and killed by a train in Leetsdale late Tuesday night.

According to emergency officials, the accident happened at the crossing at First and Ferry Streets around 9:30 p.m.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 54-year-old Carolyn Mayhugh, of McKees Rocks.

Former railroad engineer Domenic Cicco happened upon the crash.

"It seems strange to me why situations like this happen, it's a straight piece of track," said Cicco.

The former railroad engineer went on to talk about how hard it is to stop a train.

"You can't stop on a dime. They equate hitting a vehicle with a train to what it's like when you are in your vehicle on the highway running over a soda can," said Cicco.

Police are trying to figure out why Mayhugh was walking along the tracks and why she didn't hear or see the train.

"A lot of us in the railroad community not only feel bad for the victim that was hit and killed, but also for the railroad crew that had to experience the situation. They have to live with that the rest of their lives," said Cicco.
