Judge Refuses To Reduce Bond For Father Of Man Who Killed K-9

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A judge has refused to lower the bond for the father of a man who died after stabbing a K-9, saying he was already given once chance.

Bruce Kelley Sr., 60, was arrested on March 6 in Wilkinsburg by Port Authority Police. He is facing trespassing, public drunkenness, and weapons charges. Kelley Sr. was found on port Authority property with a knife and brass knuckles in his possession.

He was arrested just days after he walked free on bond. That event coincided with a judge throwing out one of two aggravated assault charges he was facing for an incident in January.

Kelley Sr. was originally jailed in January on two counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and public drunkenness.

Those charges stemmed from an altercation with police at a gazebo in Wilkinsburg, which ultimately left his son Bruce Kelley Jr. and a police K-9 dead.

When asked what happened to cause his most recent run-in with the law, Kelley Sr. explained that he went back to the scene because he was trying to retrieve some clothes.

He also defended his son.

"What they did to my son was uncalled for, he did what he had to do," Kelley Sr. said. "My son was just protecting himself."

He went on to say that the reason he was carrying brass knuckles when he was arrested was to defend himself. Kelley Sr. thinks that people have the wrong impression of him.

"I don't want people to think I'm like a tough guy or nothing, I'm just like everybody else, minding my business," he said. "Everyone else wanted to blow things out of proportion. The system is jacked up and I've been going through too much."
