Officials: Science Center Fire Started During Staff Demonstration

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A small fire caused some tense moments at the Carnegie Science Center on the city's North Shore on Monday evening.

The fire was first reported just after 7 p.m., and crews had everything under control before 8 p.m. Three alarms were issued for the fire because it was considered a high-rise facility, but officials say the fire was a minor one.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, it happened on the fourth floor of the facility.

"There was a staff training on the fourth floor, and at that time there was a demonstration going on and something caught fire," said Public Safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler.

Officials say the Science Center was closed to the public at the time of the fire, and only employees were inside. They were all evacuated to safety.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, but one female employee was being treated at the scene.

"Our paramedics are seeing one individual, a female who may have just been overly excited. She wasn't injured physically by anything that happened here today," said Toler.
