Volunteers Honor Fred Rogers' Legacy On 'Be My Neighbor Day'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – This weekend, hundreds of volunteers gave back in honor of the late Fred Rogers.

People of all ages took part this year's Be My Neighbor Day.

"It's our third annual event. We bring together families and children to work on behalf of others. We have several stations, some of the children are making sunflowers, some of the children are making quilts for veterans," Chief Volunteer Engagement Officer Lois Mufuka Martin said.

The event, hosted by the United Way in partnership with The Fred Rogers Company and WQED, took place at four YMCA locations throughout the area.

In all, about 500 volunteers joined the festivities.

At the Homewood-Brushton location, volunteers talked about the values of kindness and caring.

"We've had grandmothers here with grandchildren, we've had teenagers here walking around with little brothers and sisters, we've had students from the University of Pittsburgh come and volunteer all morning," Martin said.

Each year, Be My Neighbor Day is held on or near Fred Rogers' birthday.

Organizers say the activities are a perfect way to honor him and make sure his legacy is passed on to new generations.

"We're excited to be here. The most exciting part of the day is watching the little children visit with Daniel Tiger," Martin said.
