Audubon Society Confirms 2nd Pip At Hays Bald Eagle Nest

HAYS (KDKA) – A second egg in the Hays bald eagle nest has pipped just a day after the first eaglet hatched.

According to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, it's been 35 days since the second egg was laid, which is within the timeframe of hatching.

The first eaglet hatched around 12:37 a.m. Monday.

"We noticed the pip [Sunday], just prior to 10 a.m. That's when the eaglet just starts to break the egg shell. And the eaglet didn't actually fully emerge until just after 12:30 [Monday morning]. So, 14 hours or so that it took this little one," said Brian Shema, operations director at the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.

A third egg in the Hays nest is expected to hatch by Saturday.

The Audubon Society also has a camera trained on an eagles' nest in Harmar. The view there is not quite as good as it is in Hays, although they have determined that at least one egg has been laid thus far.
