"Antique Butcher" Uses Cast Away Items To Create Art

VANDERGRIFT (KDKA) -- A Vandergrift man is using cast away items to create art, earning him the nickname "Antique Butcher."

Mark Neal takes a piece of this and that, and makes unique furniture.

"Most of my furniture is primitive," Neal shows off a favorite, a green cupboard. "The molding, the trim was not on the cupboard. We put the trim on there which is on old antique trim from a house."

His workshop is a sea of stuff. Neal takes pride in seeing potential in everything.

"I use old wood, metal lighting, just things that I see," he said.

People are taking notice of his special talents.

"He grabs and puts things together that you would never think of," customer Linda Alworth said. "A lot of people see it as a piece of junk, but Mark sees it as a piece of art."

Neal explained that his work is anything but draining.

"The shop is where I am at peace all the time. I am happy when I am doing my work," he said.
