Slippery Rock, Girl Scouts Team Up To Keep Girls Interested In Science

SLIPPERY ROCK (KDKA) -- Girl Scouts of all ages flocked to Slippery Rock University Saturday to learn about science at the "Invention Convention."

The Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania invited scouts of all ages, from kindergarten to 12th grade, to attend the "Invention Convention" science event at Slippery Rock University. The girls learned about science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on activities that helped build real-life problem-solving skills. More than 200 Girl Scouts were estimated to be in attendance.

Volunteer students from Slippery Rock University taught and assisted the scouts with the experiments. Dr. Robert Snyder, a Slippery Rock professor, said the goal of the event is to keep girls interested in science as they grow older.

"What the research shows is that girls start off interested in science and it drops off when they get to middle school, so what we try to do is get these girls that are getting ready to get to that age and model the kind of science that they can get from our students," Snyder said. "So they're getting to see these college students, who are all girls in our major for the most part, that are excited about science, that are modeling and showing them how good science can be. So our aim is to help keep them interested in science as they go on."

Scouts were also able to earn badges and patches at the event.
