Court Records Reveal Snapshot Of Sexual Offenders In Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG (KDKA) -- Sex offenders in Pennsylvania are mostly white and male, according to statistics released by the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.

A sex offender is an individual who is required by state law to register with the Pennsylvania State Police because they committed a sexually violent offense such as rape, prostitution, kidnapping, child pornography or sexual assault.

The numbers were based on 4,325 sexual offenders in Pennsylvania with a total of 16,987 offenses. The data was taken between January 2013 and December 2015.

Overwhelmingly, sex offenders were found to be male. Only 112 of the offenders were female.

Statistics showed that 74 percent of these sex offenders were white, while 21 percent were black.

About half of Pennsylvania sex offenders were between the ages of 19 and 35. Offenders between the ages of 46 and 65 made up another 20 percent, as did offenders ages 36 to 45.

Philadelphia County has the highest rate of sexual offender cases, with 15 percent. Allegheny County comes in second with nine percent.

44 percent of offenders were charged with the sexual abuse of children.

The data was released as part of a program called PA Courts InfoShare.
