Woman Dies Days After She Was Injured In Home Invasion

ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania woman died Saturday days after she was critically injured in a home invasion by an Ohio man who police say kidnapped his ex-girlfriend.

Police and the Erie County coroner said Kum Miller, 58, died just before noon. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Kyle Johnson, 25, of Warrensville Heights in suburban Cleveland, was charged earlier with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

Police allege that Johnson kidnapped Brandi Shakir, 23, a former girlfriend, on Monday in Oakwood Village and had her in his car trunk when he used a crowbar to pry open a door of Miller's home in an upscale Erie neighborhood, Erie police said.

Shakir told police that Johnson "was looking for a place to collect his thoughts and possibly get a different vehicle, as his vehicle was too well-known to law enforcement," Deputy Chief Donald Dacus has told The Erie Times-News.

Detectives allege in a criminal complaint that Johnson then used the crowbar to beat Miller and also stabbed her in the neck with a box cutter before dragging her into the attic. Her husband arrived home later, encountered Johnson, fought with him and screamed for help, authorities say. A neighbor who responded shot Johnson in the right shoulder and left leg when he tried to flee as police arrived.

Johnson was treated for the gunshot wounds then taken to the county prison. The husband was treated for injuries and released.

Police in the Cleveland suburb of Richmond Heights had issued a felonious assault warrant for Johnson the previous week after Shakir reported that he had assaulted her. Shakir also sought and received a temporary restraining order against him.
