Grill To Blame For House Fire In Trafford

TRAFFORD (KDKA) -- Flames ripped through part of a home in Westmoreland County, and fire officials say a grill is to blame.

The fire was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the 500 block of Gilmore Avenue in Trafford.

"The homeowner was trying to work a grill on the back porch and it sort of malfunctioned," said Assistant Trafford Fire Chief Tom Dobrinick. "It caught the back porch on fire and the homeowner tried to put it out, but he was unsuccessful."

The fire spread up the back of the home and damaged the second floor and the rear of the house.

The man who was using the grill was not hurt, and everyone inside the house was able to escape safely.

One firefighter was checked out at the scene for dizziness, but is expected to be okay.

Fire officials deemed the fire was accidental, and they were able to keep it from spending to other homes in the area.

"Not really sure if the grill exploded," said Assistant Chief Dobrinick. "Nothing like an explosion big time, when it did light, it could have not lit properly with the over abundance of gas in the grill."

The American Red Cross is assisting the people forced out of their home.
