Major Events May Make Downtown Chaos This Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- People arrived at the Convention Center Friday, looking for t-shirts and packets.

Some said they had a bit of studying too.

"I just wanted to make sure what time I needed to be here in case of road closures and all that," Tina Palaggo said.

The Pittsburgh Marathon had the answers to road closings and parking, and while the info is on their website too, there were plenty of pictures being taken.

Lots on the North Shore will open at 4 a.m. Sunday morning.

"We get a large crowd for the Marathon. We'll fill Lot 1 and the West General Robinson and even some of these lots around the Clark Building will fill," said Ralph Reetz with Alco Parking.

Marathoners are not the only fans who need those spots on Sunday. The Pirates host the Reds at 1:35 p.m. and fans will start arriving around 11 a.m., which is about the same time runners are heading home.

The Sunday Marathon road closures start at 2 a.m. Forbes Avenue through the heart of Oakland will be closed starting at 6:30 a.m.

It's also the University of Pittsburgh's graduation ceremony Sunday.

"We moved it back to 2 p.m. partially to accommodate the influx of crowds to the Marathon this year," said John Fedele with Pitt.

They'll be helping families who might choose to arrive a bit late.

"We're running shuttles from the more distant lots to the Peterson Events Center to keep students and parents from having to walk up the hill," Fedele said.
