Two Peregrine Falcon Eggs Hatch, Only One Chick Survives

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Two of the four eggs in the Pittsburgh Peregrine falcon nest hatched Friday, but only one of the chicks survived.

Hope, the female Peregrine falcon who has been occupying the Cathedral of Learning nest since November 2015, laid her first egg on March 13, and eventually laid a total of four eggs. The first hatched the morning of April 29.

The second egg began to hatch later that afternoon, but the chick didn't survive for long. In archived footage on the WildEarth website, Hope is seen pulling the chick out of its egg. The second chick is moving and appears to be alive, but Hope carries it away from the first chick and seems to kill it. She then appears to eat it.

There are still two unhatched eggs remaining. You can watch a live stream of the Peregrine falcon right here on the Peregrine falcon cam.

Hope's first mate, E2, was found dead just days after her first egg was laid. She was spotted flying with a new male falcon a few days later.
