Nurses, Anesthetists Authorize Strike At Indiana Regional

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) - A union representing registered nurses and anesthetists has voted in favor of striking at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

The vote taken Tuesday doesn't mean the union will strike at the hospital, only that the union is authorized to call a strike if contract talks break down.

The union represents 340 nurses and anesthetists who have been working without a contract since October.

The union is especially concerned about a contract provision they say will triple the health insurance contribution for part-time nurses. More than half the hospital's nurses work part-time hours.

A hospital spokesman says the union's claims that the hospital's CEO make more than $500,000 annually, and other allegations about executives' pay, are not true.

The nurses plan an informational picket May 13.
