One Woman Killed, Another Injured In Washington County Shooting

WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) -- A late night shooting in the City of Washington left one woman dead and another injured.

Police say a group of young women and one man were walking in the 1100 block of Bruce Street around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, when a vehicle approached them and started shooting.

Investigators have been questioning two persons of interest.

Alexis Barnett, 19, of Washington, was shot in the back. She was taken to Washington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about an hour later.  Jasmine Young, 21, was shot in the leg.  She was released from the hospital this morning.

"I peeked out window and saw a girl staggering and go into the bank right there," witness Kevin Garbart said.

Kevin Garbart was home with his wife and granddaughter when he heard gunshots go off.

"I heard some more screaming and yelling and heard someone say he's going around block here he comes again," Garbart said.

Young's uncle says he's fed up.

"Doesn't anybody value life anymore?  That's my question doesn't anyone value life," Jasmine Young's uncle Ross Bender Jr. said.

The girls were part of a group headed home for the night.

"We believe at this time neither one of the victims was targeted," Lt. Dan Stanek with the City of Washington police department said.  "And these girls just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time."

Police believe a young man in the group was the intended target.  They say some males pulled up in a small silver car and started shooting.

Thursday afternoon, police were called to Belvedere Acres apartments in nearby Canton Township to serve a drug warrant as well as question possible witnesses.  When they knocked on the door they say one man fled.  The other barricaded himself inside and it turned into a SWAT standoff.  Police took the two men into custody to question and are calling them persons of interest.

"Living in building without knowing what's going on is twice as scary," resident of the apartments Dajlea Tarnik said.

KDKA's Amy Wadas spoke to Jasmine Young through Facebook earlier in the day Thursday.

She says Barnett just buried her grandmother earlier in the day Wednesday, only hours before she was killed.
