3 People In Custody After Indiana Co. Double Fatal Shooting

INDIANA BOROUGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating after two people were shot and killed in Indiana County Tuesday night.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 1300 block of Oakland Avenue in Indiana Borough around 11:45 p.m.

Officers were initially called to an apartment building for a report of shots being fired. When they arrived, they were unable to determine the source of the gunshots. However, they were alerted to a gunshot victim arriving at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

That victim has been identified as Shawn Richardson, 34, of Wilkinsburg. He would later die from his injuries.

Police returned to the apartment and found George Exum, 21, of Norristown, in a second floor hallway.

Exum, a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, surrendered to police and a .38-caliber revolver was found in his possession.

A second man, identified by the Indiana County Coroner's Office as 34-year-old Jamar Watt of Pittsburgh, had been shot inside of Exum's apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsies have been performed on both victims.

According to police, the two fatal shooting victims went to the apartment with Catherine Hullenbaugh, 21, Consetta Menta, 28, and another woman to buy marijuana. The two men allegedly talked about robbing Exum prior to their arrival.

"There was a plan to go there last evening with the intent to rob the defendant," said Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty. "This encounter apparently turned violent at some point and Exum discharged his weapon, killing the unidentified male and striking Richardson who later succumbed to his injuries at Indiana Regional Medical Center."

Once inside the apartment, things escalated and Exum allegedly shot both Richardson and the other male.

"Self-defense, self-defense, they tried to kill me," Exum said while being led into the magistrate's office.

Hullenbaugh told police it started with two men arguing about the price of the marijuana. She then ran outside and heard gunshots.

Exum said the two men beat him with a tire iron while trying to make him open his safe. He said he feared for his life when he grabbed his gun and shot them both.

"I thought they were gonna kill me. The one grabbed a knife," he said.

Exum has been charged with two counts of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and possession with intent to deliver.

Hullenbaugh and Menta have been charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy to commit homicide and one count of criminal conspiracy to commit robbery.

All three are being held in the Indiana County Jail without bond.

Indiana Borough Police continue to investigate.
