Pittsburgh School Teachers, Workers Vote To Extend Contracts

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The union representing Pittsburgh public school teachers and other employees says members have voted overwhelmingly to ratify extensions to the contracts with the Pittsburgh School District through June 2017.

The Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers said Monday that the professional unit contract was accepted by a nearly 8-to-1 margin. The union said the paraprofessional unit contract was accepted by a more than 12-to-1 margin, and the technical-clerical unit contract was accepted unanimously.

The new agreements extend the five-year contracts that expired in June 2015.

Union president Nina-Esposito Visgitis said officials look forward to negotiating "a longer-term contract that is in the best interests of our educators and our students."

The Pittsburgh Board of Education votes on the contracts Wednesday, the same day a new top administrator is expected to be named.
