1 Pleads, 1 Balks To Pennsylvania Heroin Overdose Deaths
PITTSBURGH (AP) - One Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to supplying fentanyl-laced heroin that resulted in at least two overdose deaths, but his co-defendant balked at a scheduled plea and opted to stand trial instead.
Thirty-four-year-old Homestead resident Romar Watts pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy to distribute the drug that resulted in the deaths of Stacey Shaw and Ray Smith. An attorney for 32-year-old Pittsburgh resident Andre Higgs didn't comment on his client's change of heart.
Shaw overdosed in the bathroom of a Cambria County convenience store in March 2015. Smith died at a home in Munhall in April 2015.
A third co-defendant, 40-year-old Ebensburg resident Brian Borruto, pleaded guilty last week and will be sentenced in September.
The sentence for distributing drugs that kill someone ranges from 20 years to life in prison.
