You can tell it's the Memorial Day weekend. People are talking about summer vacation plans and it seems that every retailer is holding a sale.

Once in a while, though, there's a reminder of why we have a 3-day weekend. On Monday, May 30th, there will be a special ceremony at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland to honor Pennsylvania service members who have died in the war on terrorism. It's just one of many such events that will occur in towns and cemeteries around the country.

That's what Memorial Day is all about.

It's a time – however brief – to honor those who served and died to protect this country and the lives and liberties of its citizens.

We can never repay that debt but we can make a small down payment this weekend by remembering those fallen heroes and their sacrifice.
