PennDOT Warns Drivers: Line Painting Season Has Arrived

PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- Meticulously, PennDOT's line painting truck made its way along Frankstown Road Tuesday as a line of cars cued up behind its trailing truck.

The trailing truck is there to help prevent you from inadvertently spraying paint onto your car with your tires.

"It takes about two to three minutes for the paint to dry. It's a fast drying paint," says PennDOT District 11 spokesman Steve Cowan.

PennDOT recommends you keep at least 300 feet back from the spraying paint and try not to drive on the freshly painted lines.

But the painting crews say they often see drivers become impatient and drive through the lines, and they just know they are spraying paint up into their wheel wells and along the lower running boards of their cars.

If that happens to you, Cowan says, "Motorist should take their car to a high-pressure car wash as soon as possible to try to remove the paint."

If the water doesn't remove the paint, Cowan says spray on some WD-40 and let it sit an hour to loosen the paint and try again with the high-pressure water. As it says on your shampoo bottle, rinse and repeat until clean.

Never use a solvent or abrasive on the paint because that will damage the cars original paint.

As for paint in the wheel well, Cowan says, "We suggest using a Vaseline petroleum jelly. Apply it overnight and then take it to a high-pressure car wash."

The process may have to be repeated.

If the paint still won't come off, you can file a claim with the state by filling out a Line Paint Claim Form. You must get the form by calling your county PennDOT office.
