Suspects Sought In Penn Hills Swim Club Shooting That Injured 3

PENN HILLS (KDKA) – There are still no leads after three people were shot at a Memorial Day pool party in Penn Hills.

In the 50 years the Olympic Swim and Health Club has been open, they've never had anything like this happen. The owner said that the man who sponsored this party told her that this shooting was targeted.

"It was a fluke. We've had many parties before without an incident and I hope to God it never happens again," Mary Sullivan said.

For Sullivan, what happened Monday night is baffling.

There were close to 100 people at a party sponsored by a man who'd rented the outdoor pool before. Around 7 p.m., Sullivan saw something out of the ordinary - two cars with the engines running backed into spots that were blocking other cars.

"I was on my way back to tell them that they had to move their cars when I heard eight to 10 pops," Sullivan said.

According to Sullivan, the cars took off after the shots were fired. They found one man who'd been shot. Sullivan said they took him to the hospital.

Penn Hills Police Chief Howard Burton said two other men showed up to UPMC East in Monroeville with gunshot wounds. They were then flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

"One individual was shot a couple times in the chest, another individual was shot several times in the back and another person shot in the shoulder," Chief Burton said.

Today, their conditions aren't known. Police said they haven't been able to speak with the shooting victims yet.

The organizer of the pool party told KDKA by telephone that his organization was providing free food and admission at the to thank the community for support.

When officers arrived at the pool Monday night, most of the people at the party had scattered.

"They seemed a little panicked," lifeguard Stephen Kustra said. "As soon as those gunshots went off, everyone from this side of the pool ran down to the other end away from the sound of the gunshots."

Investigators found casings from two different caliber handguns. They're going to be speaking with the man who hosted the party, but are asking for witnesses to come forward.

The owner says they're considering getting security for an upcoming swim meet here just to ease everybody's mind.
