Police: 15-Year-Old Accidentally Shot Himself While Loading Gun

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Nick Ursiny, 15, a prized member of the Kiski Area Marching Band, died after a tragic accident at his family's Allegheny Township home.

"Our officers arrived and the parents were both at his side and were trying to give him any help they could give him," said Chief John Fontaine with Allegheny Township Police.

Police said Ursiny accidentally shot himself in the head just after 5 p.m. on Friday. He was in the backyard with his dad, target shooting.

"The father was in the process of setting up some targets and his son was attempting to load the gun when it accidentally discharged and the bullet hit him in the head," Chief Fontaine said.

He was flown to UPMC Presbyterian, where he died Sunday. Ursiny was described as polite and a hard worker, especially for the band, where he played the mellophone and french horn.

Friends say the loss is difficult and hard to believe.

"He was a lovable kid, like, he was one of my best friends through the whole ninth grade," said Bradyn Wesner.
