Hazelwood Hostage Situation Ends Peacefully

HAZELWOOD (KDKA) - Police and the SWAT team were called to the scene of a hostage situation in Hazelwood Friday morning.

According to police, the scene in Hazelwood began to unfold around 5 a.m. at a house on Monongahela Street. But, it ended at a house on Blair Street.

Investigators say two men got into an argument at the house on Monongahela Street. There was a struggle and shots were fired, but no one was hit.

There was also a woman and two children, ages 5 and 3, were also inside the house.

Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the shooter left that house and returned to his Blair Street home.

He has since been identified as 41-year-old Chonel Dixon.

According to police, the woman and two children followed Dixon to the Blair Street home, where they were held against their will.

A sea of SWAT teams, Pittsburgh Police, firearms, emergency equipment and heavy duty armored trucks rolled in.

"There was a female with two children who also left the residence. They were held against their will inside the house and SWAT was called to the scene. What we were able to do is get everyone out of the house safely," Toler said.

Carl Blanchard lives on Blair Street and was close to the scene.

"I was taking my son to get breakfast and right outside on the street was an officer holding her gun and told us to wait," Blanchard said.

Eventually, Dixon came out of the house on his own and did not resist. He was then taken to jail.

There are no reported injuries.
